Rae Bareli: The Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rae Bareli, organised a programme to mark World Anaesthesia Day 2026, highlighting the vital role of anaesthesia, pain medicine and critical care in ensuring patient safety and improving healthcare outcomes.
The event was held from 3 pm to 4 pm in the seminar hall on the second floor of the institute’s Operation Theatre Complex. This year’s theme was “Advancing from Knowledge to Innovation in Anaesthesia: Towards Safe Surgery and Healthy Lives,” emphasising the importance of medical knowledge, innovation and technological advancement in safer surgical care.

Dr Amita Jain, Executive Director of AIIMS Rae Bareli, attended the programme as the chief guest. Additional Medical Superintendent Dr Neeraj Kumar Srivastava, senior officials, faculty members, resident doctors and healthcare professionals were also present.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Jain said the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care was an essential and wide-ranging component of any modern hospital. Its responsibilities extend beyond administering anaesthesia during surgery to include specialised services such as pain medicine and critical care.
She expressed satisfaction that AIIMS Rae Bareli had started providing critical care and pain medicine services alongside anaesthesia. These services play an important role in ensuring patient safety during surgery, providing life-saving treatment to critically ill patients and managing acute and chronic pain.
Dr Jain described the expansion of these services as a significant step towards delivering comprehensive, integrated and quality patient care at the institute.
The programme featured presentations on the significance of anaesthesia, patient safety and its contribution to modern medical practice. Activities included a presentation on the message of World Anaesthesia Day, an overview of departmental achievements, and the distribution of prizes to winners of competitions organised during Anaesthesia Week.

Guest lectures were also delivered, while faculty members and resident doctors were felicitated for their contributions. A brief cultural presentation formed part of the celebrations.
The event was attended by Dr Jameel Abdul Aleem, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care, along with faculty members Dr Kali Charan Das, Dr Girish Kumar Singh, Dr Abhay Raj Yadav, Dr Adabala Vijay Babu, Dr Vinay Pathak, Dr Anil Kumar and Dr Ankit Vyas.
The programme also recognised the contributions of anaesthesia specialists, doctors, residents and healthcare workers in delivering safe and effective treatment.
Anaesthesia plays a crucial role throughout the surgical process, from preoperative patient preparation and monitoring during surgery to postoperative pain management. It is also integral to life-saving interventions in critical situations. Pain medicine, meanwhile, helps manage acute and chronic pain, improving patients’ functional abilities and quality of life.
The celebration aimed to reinforce the importance of patient safety, teamwork, innovation and compassionate care, while encouraging healthcare professionals to pursue excellence in anaesthesia, pain medicine and critical care.
